Tracheoesophageal Fistula After Anterior Cervical Spine Screw/Plate Fixation
Abstract
A tracheoesophageal fistula subsequent to anterior cervical fixation is rare. A 26-year-old man had cervical cord injury because of C7 fracture and dislocation. Anterior plate fixation and bone graft were performed. Neurologic deterioration
occurred and
tracheoesophageal fistula was detected about 1 year after the surgery. The cause of this fistula was due to the esophageal perforation secondary to loosened screw. Metallic implant was removed with fistulectomy. Functional status was more
aggravated
although neurologic status was improved after that. We report a case of tracheoesophageal fistula resulting from plate subluxation of screw after anterior plate fixation of the cervical spine.
